The behind-the-ear hearing aid is the oldest of the modern styles, and it is still the one audiologists reach for when a hearing loss is strong, when a child needs fitting, or when an older wearer needs something easy to hold. It has also changed a lot. Today’s BTE models are smaller, rechargeable and connect to a phone, yet they keep the extra power and toughness the style has always offered.
This guide explains the different kinds of BTE, who should choose one and who should not, picks our top 3 and top 10 BTE models for 2026, and lists what BTEs cost in India on the 2026 price lists, with Signia and Phonak first, followed by Oticon, ReSound, Bernafon, Widex and Starkey.
At a Glance
- A BTE sits behind the ear and sends sound into the ear through a tube and an earmold or dome. All the electronics stay outside the ear canal.
- There are three broad kinds: standard BTE with an earmold, mini BTE with a thin tube, and power BTE (SP, UP) for severe to profound loss.
- BTEs suit severe loss, children, older wearers and anyone with frequent ear discharge or a small canal.
- Signia BTEs start at ₹10,990 (Fast P); Signia Motion Charge&Go IX runs ₹72,990 to ₹3,64,990 a unit. Phonak Terra BTE is ₹33,000 and Naída L ranges from ₹63,000 to ₹3,23,000.
- Our top 3 for 2026: Signia Motion Charge&Go IX (best overall), Phonak Naída L-PR (best rechargeable power BTE) and Signia Intuis 3 BTE (best value at ₹26,990).
- The trade-off is visibility: a BTE is easier to see than a receiver-in-canal or in-canal aid.
What a BTE Is, and How It Differs From a RIC
A behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aid keeps its microphones, processor, battery and speaker in a curved case that rests behind the ear. Sound travels from the speaker through a clear ear hook and tube into an earmold or dome in the ear canal. Because nothing electronic sits in the canal, the parts are protected from wax and moisture, and there is room for a bigger battery and a more powerful speaker.
A receiver-in-canal (RIC) aid looks similar from the outside, but its speaker sits inside the ear canal at the end of a thin wire. That makes RICs smaller and better for mild to moderate loss, which is why they dominate for first-time wearers; our guide to hearing aids for mild hearing loss covers that side. BTEs take over as the loss gets stronger or when practical needs come first.
The Three Kinds of BTE
Standard BTE with a custom earmold
The classic design. An ear hook and tube connect to an earmold made from an impression of your ear. The sealed fit stops feedback at high volumes, which is why this is the usual choice for severe loss and for children, whose earmolds can be remade as the ear grows.
Mini BTE with a thin tube
A smaller case with a slim tube and an open dome. It looks much like a RIC, suits mild to moderate loss, and avoids putting electronics in the canal. Bernafon’s Entra B10 miniBTE, for example, is ₹79,990 a pair on its list.
Power BTE (SP and UP)
Super power (SP) and ultra power (UP) models are built for severe to profound loss. The price lists show what that means in numbers: Signia’s Motion Charge&Go IX covers a fitting range of 10 to 120 dB across its M, P and SP versions, and Bernafon’s Leox UP lists up to 120 dB against 110 dB for the SP.

Who Should Choose a BTE
- Severe or profound hearing loss. A power BTE gives more amplification with less feedback than smaller styles.
- Children. The earmold can be replaced as the ear grows, and the aid itself is tougher.
- Older wearers or anyone with limited dexterity. A larger case with bigger buttons is easier to handle, as our guide to hearing aids for senior citizens explains.
- People with frequent ear infections, discharge or heavy wax, since no electronics sit in the canal.
- Anyone who needs a telecoil, a direct audio input or a classroom or TV microphone. BTEs usually have room for these.
Where a BTE is not the best fit
If appearance is the priority and your loss is mild to moderate, a RIC or an invisible CIC or IIC aid will be less noticeable. A closed earmold can also make your own voice sound boomy at first, and tubes need replacing every few months as they harden. A good fitting and a vented earmold reduce the first problem; the second is part of routine care.

This shortlist is built from the 2026 price lists and each model’s published features, such as fitting range, rechargeability and number of channels. It is not a lab ranking, and the right aid for you still depends on your audiogram, so treat it as a starting point for a trial.

Battery or Rechargeable BTE?
Battery BTEs use larger cells than smaller styles, size 13 or 675, so they last longer between changes. Oticon’s sheet, for instance, rates its Geno 2 D BTE at up to 270 hours on a size 13 battery, against about 130 hours for a size 312 cell in its miniRITE. That makes battery BTEs practical in places with power cuts. Rechargeable BTEs such as Signia Motion Charge&Go and Phonak Naída L-PR remove battery changes altogether, which helps people with poor eyesight or shaky hands. Our rechargeable hearing aids guide compares charger costs, and the rechargeable and Bluetooth pages explain the features.
How to Choose the Right BTE
- Start with a full hearing test. The audiogram decides whether you need a standard, P or SP/UP power level.
- Decide between battery and rechargeable based on your routine and how reliable power is at home.
- Ask about earmold or dome options, and try both if your loss allows it.
- Check for a telecoil or accessory support if you need TV, phone or classroom streaming.
- Trial the aid in your own life before buying. Hearwell offers a 7-day trial.

Can people see a BTE hearing aid?
